Meet Monarch Beach October Instructor of the Month, Gretchen!

For those of you who haven’t already had the pleasure of meeting her, let us introduce you to our October Instructor of the Month in Monarch Beach: Gretchen! This fresh face has been rocking the Saddle Room podium since August and has already become one of our favorite people to push it up and tap it back with.

Since she’s still relatively new and we’re girl-crushin’ hard, we asked her to drop by The Outpost to give us the whole nitty-gritty on all-things Gretchen. Check it out!

Give us the nitty-gritty on you:
I was born and raised in Southern California and moved to Dana Point 5 years ago when I married my Laguna native, surfer-boy hubby. We now have 3 young children together and more love (and laundry) in our lives than we know what to do with.
Spin came into my life after my last 2 babies (twins) and it has and continues to help me push through the most trying of times. When I’ve had an extra long feeling day with the kids and I don’t know how I’m going to finish it, I will think about a time in class when I pushed myself past my self-imposed limit, to remind myself how strong and capable I am.
I am so grateful for this company and for every single amazing instructor who pours their heart and soul into creating an atmosphere and feeling that elevates and inspires. It’s simply life-changing and I will be forever grateful to have found this community.

What brought you to the Grit podium?
After the first spin class I ever took almost 2 years ago, I thought to myself, where have you been all my life? The rush of positive vibrations I felt afterward and the effect I felt in my body and my mind left me feeling so inspired. I wanted to be able to give that feeling to others. I had the goal in my mind to become an instructor ever since that first fateful day of spin and it drove me to work my booty off ever since to get me to where I am today.

What was your first experience in the Saddle Room?
My first GritCycle Saddle Room experience was with the amazing Lisa Mikelson. I was blown away by her grace and presence in the room, and left feeling accomplished, energized and motivated to come back for more.

Do you have any pre-class rituals?
While I’m getting ready to teach a class I always listen to my playlist all the way through. It gets me feeling fired up and excited to share it! When I arrive in the Saddle Room, I check my mic and spritz the podium with Zum Mist which I got turned onto from Lisa. Then, I head out to the lobby to catch up with the awesome gritty babes, greet riders and grab some mints!

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I raced BMX when I was younger. I had a pink helmet, pink BMX outfit and I’ll never forget the first race I won! (I made a girl cry.) My brother started racing first, and when I told my dad I wanted to do it he had no hesitation in supporting me. I’ll always remember how proud he was of me and will cherish those memories of us at the tracks forever!

What motivates you/inspires you?
My family, my children. The fire that burns inside of me to do my best is ignited by them.

Do you do any other forms of workouts?
I like to run before getting ready to teach a class or on days when I can’t make it to a spin class. I will take my kids along with me a lot of the time and it increases my workout- 30ish lbs on my back and 70ish in the stroller going up and down hills in our neighborhood. I’ll usually bring a speaker too and sing along to music while running- this helps me with my breath control while teaching. We turn some heads.

What would be your last meal?
La Sirena Salmon Burrito. Hands down. I’m drooling. Oh, and can’t forget to have it with one of their gingeritas!

 Who is your celebrity crush?
Dick Van Dyke! Haha, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is my all time favorite movie so I watched it a million times growing up. I fell in love with his charm and his talent!

Any vices?
Tequila! My drink of choice is tequila soda lime. My other fave is ginger kombucha mixed with a shot (or two?) of tequila and lime. SO GOOD.

What do you do when you’re not getting gritty?
I am with my beautiful kiddos! We frequent the local parks and beaches. Anything outdoors is game for us! I also love date nights with my hubby. We love to enjoy the many incredible restaurants around town, go to concerts, and check out local live music!
