Grit Story: Peggy Lee

gr

Today’s Grit Story is none other than Peggy Lee.

Claimed more “friend” than client, Peggy is quite the Grit celebrity {and not just for the Lululemon hookups she used to give us when she was manager at Fashion Island.}

Peggy is as hilarious and charming as she is gorgeous. You always hope she shows up early for class and stays late after so you can snag her for a chat or two. Peggy gives great conversation.

But playful demeanor aside, Peggy is a beast when it comes to her rides at Grit;  she is a dedicated Gritty who never misses a class, always sits in the front row, and makes her workouts a priority.

Here is her story:

I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and moved to Huntington Beach in 4th grade. After graduating from Edison High School, I lived in Boston, San Francisco, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Portland before finding myself back in Huntington Beach!

I was a high school and middle school social studies teacher, and also worked at Lululemon Athletics at Fashion Island for 6.5 years. I am new to the mortgage industry, working at Stearns Lending.

I live in ECM with my husband Rick (who was my first crush in 4th grade!) and Buddha girl, our 9-year-old English Bulldog. We are all die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fans!

I have major wanderlust and love to travel! I have traveled to more than 30 countries and have 30 more I want to visit! Ireland and Nicaragua is on the calendar for 2017!

I LOVE TO EAT but don’t cook. Currently, my favorite restaurants are Pueblo, Sol Cocina and Kitakata Ramen.

Still obsessed with Sidecar Donoughts!

I am a classic rock gal – love me some Led Zeppelin and the Stones.

My favorite emojis include the nerd emoji and the smiling poop.

Narwhals are cooler than unicorns.

I frequently get asked how I manage to ride in the front row all the time. Want to know my big secret? I pre-book all of my classes right as the Grit schedule goes live at 12:30! Pre-booking my classes 8 days out allows me to stick to my Grit schedule. I set multiple alarms on my phone to remind me to pre-book. My first alarm is set for noon, giving me a half hour to ensure I am in a  place that has good wifi. My second alarm goes off at 12:20. This gives me a 10 minute warning. My third goes off at 12:25. You get the picture! Those closest to me know not to talk to me or expect me to be engaged in any conversation from 12:27 til 12:30 until my bike is booked! I literally excuse myself from social gatherings to get myself to a place where I won’t be interrupted! And while it may be borderline obnoxious, those who LOVE Grit get it!

What brought you to Grit Cycle?

Matt Bourne! Matt invited me to his class and I was like, “OMG! Seriously?” The energy in that room was ridiculous!

Do you remember your first class at Grit? What was that like?

I was a HOT MESS- sucking wind, gasping for breath and desperately trying to stay on beat. Not much has changed.

What about Grit kept you coming back?

Two words. GRIT community.

Describe how your life {physically, mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, professionally, etc} has been affected by your time spent at Grit.

Those 45 minutes in the saddle room is MY time for ME. I am a happier Peggy when I get to Grit 3-4x a week. It keeps me sane, fit, and strong.

Have other people in your life noticed these changes? What are their thoughts?

My husband thinks I’m nuts when I excuse myself from Sunday plans so that I can get ready for 12:30 sign -ups. Truth be told, the world kinda stops from 12:27 – 12:30 for me several times a week.

What advice would you give to a first-timer coming to Grit, who’s a little unsure about the whole experience?

Hydrate and have fun!

What or Who is your biggest inspiration or motivation?

Every single person in class!

Do you have a mantra that inspires you?

Choose happiness. We tend to seek happiness when happiness is actually a choice.

Do you have a class or ride that has been your most memorable or favorite?

There is something special about Matt Bourne’s Monday 5:30pm class. I love the faces, the smiles, the laughter, the energy, the camaraderie, the friendships, ALL of it!

What is your favorite song to ride to and why?

The second to the last song of the night (Kanye West or Taylor Swift), right after weights and right before final sprints. The lights are out and Matt’s challenging us to push harder than we think we can… It’s the part of class when I take a few seconds to reflect and be grateful for my health and for each and every person in that room for riding hard and pushing me.

What was your “aha” moment, experience, ride, situation where you realized Grit was more than a spin class for you?

I can’t remember the exact moment, however, Grit became more than a spin class for me early on. I found myself looking forward to class – the best part of my day! I would arrive early (and still do) and chill after class on the patio to chat with my fellow Gritties.
