Detox without the D-word!

The language in the some of the music we play, can at times, be: obscene, and sometimes even our instructors can get a bit colorful with their own vernacular; but if there’s one word we abhor and try to avoid using at Grit Cycle it’s the word: diet.

Diets do not work. 95% of the people who “go” on diets WILL regain the weight lost and MORE within 1-5 years.

Yet around the new year people want to cleanse their bodies, and purify their systems, AKA–detox.

For true detoxification, we’re here to tell you that you’re better off with eating fresh, organic, whole foods, drinking purified water, exercising regularly, dry brushing, and keeping yourself free from toxic goods {and people.}

One of the best ways to detox your body is to purge your household of the everyday products you use which contain ingredients that can be harmful to your health. The lion’s share of our “bulk” brands often contain substances proven to be toxic. It’s never been easier or less expensive too, to go non-toxic.

The Environmental Working Group {EWG} the leading non-profit, non-partisan organization in the U.S. dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, provides an easy-to-use app that can scan your household and beauty products for toxic and adverse substances.

You will notice that all of the locker room amenities, our hand wash and hand sanitizer, and the cleaning products at Grit Cycle are all free of harmful chemicals, contain NO parabens, phthalates, harmful sulfates and, of course, are cruelty free.  After working so hard in the saddle room to rid yourself of all that gunk you came to sweat out, we definitely don’t want you putting more rubbish back into your system.

Our staff esteems these same toxic-free values; we reached out and had them share their favorite toxic-free products:

Boss Babe and Instructor extraordinaire, Dani not only makes sure both Grit studios are stocked with clean, non-toxic, cruelty-free products {she’s an animal lover of course,} but she walks her talk at home too. She credits Mad Hippie Vitamin C SerumJosie Maran Argan OilLush Eau Roma Water, and Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel for keeping that porcelain skin of hers gorgeous and free of nasty chemicals. Dani keeps her own household spick and span with Method, Seventh Generation and Mrs. Meyers products.

Gritty Babe Amanda is a major fan of some of the stuff we even carry in our own locker room:

“I know Alba Botanica is amazing and free of most bad sh!t, I use their shampoo/conditioner/face and body wash.

Their mint body wash gave me life.”

Instructor Katie keeps minty fresh in the saddle room and at home with Dr. Bronner’s peppermint products:

“I’m addicted to all things mint; telling me I smell like toothpaste is a compliment. My family {even baby Sutton} uses Dr. Bronner’s products {shampoo, soap, lotions, toothpaste, home cleaning, etc.} The palm kernel oil is sustainably sourced, the packaging is recycled and recyclable, but mostly the stuff is fantastic! As much as I’m an animal lover and freak about not putting garbage into my body, I won’t use something that doesn’t work well. Dr. Bronner’s works great and it’s so inexpensive.”

Instructor and lover-of-all-things-wellness, Cassie, swears by Elyptol hand sanitizer:

I’ve been using Elyptol as a hand sanitizer.  I love it because it is plant-based and does NOT contain the chemicals that harm the environment like triclosan, parabens, and formaldehyde. It is NOT tested on animals and the packaging is all eco-friendly. I love it!

Our instructor Molly {with the beautiful, new, silver hair} digs these two all-natural products for keeping her ever-lovely:

Literally I don’t know what I would do if either of these got discontinued. I keep these companies in business 😂
{1} RMS Beauty “un”-cover up: it feels/looks/works great and it’s got no junk in it!!!
{2} JĀSÖN biotin conditioner:  A miracle for bleached hair.

Instructor Lisa has a treasure chest of toxic-free goodies at her home that keep her smelling fresh, her clothes clean, and her achy muscles soothed.

Lisa says her  Seventh Generation Ultra Power Plus Dishwasher Detergent gel is “great.“, she also says they make a great laundry detergent and chlorine-free bleach. Lisa also uses Citrus Magic Instant Spot and Stain Remover,  All-Natural Deodorant by Beach Organics, her Method for Wood for Good Polishsmells amazing, like almond oil,” and she loves staff-favorite: Zum Mist in Frankincense + Myrrh. She relaxes at night with Herban Moisturizer in Lavender. Lisa is a die-hard Apple Cider Vinegar user too; she uses it “to clean the dishwasher, clean up smelly clothes and as an acne facial toner.

There is an awesome app out called cruelty clutter. It scans products and lets you know if they are cruelty free. I scan everything from shampoo to paper towels. It’s awesome.
