So, for our December instructor of the month, we’ve decided to go rogue. We’re bringing you one of our more unknown, unpopular, less-attended instructors.

A sweet, Iowa-boy, who can never seem to find his spin shoes, but is always good for an in-class serenade; we’d like to introduce our instructor of the month for December: Matt Bourne.

All kidding aside, we are just as nutty for our Matt as anyone else. Co-founder of Grit Cycle with Marisa Wayne, Matt is our chief guru in charge. Kind, compassionate, playful, and driven, he leads his classes and team with an unstoppable “ENERGY!” He is a friend, leader, husband, and father and we are thrilled to have him as “instructor of the month“…

img_0386In between teaching classes, opening a new studio, and being with his family, Matt is a VERY busy boy; we are thankful he stopped by the OUTPOST recently for a little Q + A:

Thanks Matty for stopping by. Give us a the nitty-gritty on you, tell us a little more about the man behind those dreads.

I was born in California, but was raised in Waukee, Iowa, a little farm town outside of Des Moines  {I grew up 15 minutes from where John Wayne was born.} I have a smokin-hot wife {Vanessa,} and gorgeous 16-month-old baby boy.  I live in one of the most beautiful places in America!  Living the f*ckn dream!!!

What brought you to the grit podium?

The ladies…..J/K.

I just f*ckin LOVE teaching!  Just stepping on the patio of Grit fires me up!  The people, the room,  the Energy!  I live to be on that podium!

What was your first experience in the saddle room?

I got to teach the first class ever in the saddle room! It was exciting, I was nervous, and exhausted. Once the lights went out, and “Holy Grail” came on: IT. WAS. ON!!!  I remember after class sitting on the edge of the podium thinking, “WTF just happened?!?!”  From that moment I WAS ADDICTED!

What motivates inspires you?

People inspire me.  It’s so cool to get to connect with so many people who all have their own story.  You can have 56 people in that room all there for different reasons, but for 45 minutes work together pushing each other so when they walk out those barn doors they are one step closer to their goals.

Do you have any pre-class rituals?

I always change my shirt right before i teach; kinda like taking off your warm-up jacket because it’s game time.

What sets you apart from the rest of the Grit instructors; what makes your class unique?

My beautiful hair!!!

All our instructors are awesome.  One of my biggest strengths as an instructor is being able to connect with everyone in the room.  My goal is to have everyone in that room get some personal attention during our 45 minutes.

What do you do when you’re not getting gritty?

I train Muay Thai a couple of times a week.  I would love to do more yoga.  I spend as much time as I can with my little family.

When you’ve had a long day how do you de-stress?

V {Vanessa} and I get a Thai massage once a week.  We make it our date night; sometimes we talk each other into an extra night if we have had a hard day!

What’s your favorite “move” on the bike and why?

We do moves???  lol, i mean, who doesn’t like a good “figure 8???”

What is your favorite/trademark song to teach?

Black Skinhead,” it just gets me jacked up, and everyone loves “Bend Ova.

What is your favorite food?

Can i do what i don’t like???  cucumber.

I LOVE food.  Desserts especially.  I am a sugar freak!  it can get bad. Vanessa usually has to stop me from over indulging.

What song instantly gets you dancing?

ANYTHING!!  I’m a pretty good dancer and singer!

Do you have a secret talent?

I’m a pretty good puzzler!

Last book you read?

No idea.  That’s bad.  TV is bad.

What would your last meal be?

A cheese steak, french fries, good Vietnamese egg rolls, a piece of pepperoni pizza and the bananarama from the Quiet Woman {that sh!t is for real}; probably should wash it down with a Coke!

What was the first concert you went to?

I’m pretty sure it was a 311 concert when I was in middle school.

What was the last text you sent?

 “That’s a lot of f*#?!n questions!!!”——–to Katie Osumi

Who would play you in a movie?

A young, fit Russell Crowe;  like “Gladiator” Russell Crowe, I love that movie!

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

Massages and sweets.

What three things are always in your grocery cart?

Vanessa does the shopping!  So it’s usually vegetables, fish, and something gluten-free  that shouldn’t be gluten-free.

Beauty products you can’t live without?

My Knotty Boy Dread Shampoo and my Lumion Mist.

Biggest vice?

Best movie quote ever?

~  Tommy Boy

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I used to own a Mercedes junk yard!

Do you do any other forms of workouts?

I train Muay Thai.  I like to classes at WORK in Irvine, and try to take a Nicolette David yoga class I can!

Do you have anything else of interest you want your riders to know?

I once played division 1 college soccer and weighed close to 300 lbs.
