The calendar may read ‘summer is ending,’ but we’re still keeping things super sizzly in the saddle room. All September long, our own Lauren Rasky, is spicing up the spin bike as our “Instructor of the Month.” Lauren recently disco danced her cute self over to the Outpost, and let us get to know her a little more.


I’m from Pittsburgh, PA. I moved here 5 years ago for work. I oversee operations and do marketing for a company called Team Johnson. Right now, it’s just me and my new hubby and our 2 rescued fur babies. My husband and I were high school sweet hearts and neighbors growing up that dated for 12 years, did long distance for 2 years when I first moved to California, and we finally got married in June. He loves Grit, too and comes with me to class a lot. We are both big time Steelers and Pens fans. I love to learn new things about nutrition and help people with that and recently finished my Holistic Nutritionist certification. I also love to dance and spent most of my life doing that.


What brought you to the grit podium?
Grit has become like a second home to me and is a place that helps make California feel like home when we are so far away from our friends and family. I was inspired by the amazing community and found friends here. I had taught group fitness classes for 10 years before coming here but found a new passion and fire lit in me when I started riding at Grit. At first, I just loved taking classes here and loved imagining what I would do to different songs if I were to teach here. I loved that you could really be creative with the music and moves you chose and touch people in a way that was different from the types of workouts I had been teaching. I work with Lisa Mikelson at Team Johnson and was inspired by her having taken her class for the past 2 years. She made me feel like I could do it, so I went for it!

What was your first experience in the saddle room?

What motivates you/inspires you?
I am motivated by the fact that when you teach, you have the ability to change the course of someone’s day and help them forget about their problems, even if it’s only for 45 minutes. I struggled with depression in my early adult life and know how much fitness and being a part of an experience similar to the community at Grit helped me. There’s something about blasting good music, moving your body, and sometimes just singing your heart out in the process that is healing to your soul. Knowing what I went through and now being on the other side of it knowing I could be doing that for someone else means everything to me and is the motivation behind every class.

Do you have any pre-class rituals?
I listen to my playlists while walking my dogs the night before class. I like to sleep on it.

What sets you apart from the rest of the Grit instructors; what makes your class unique?
Quite possibly my dance moves lol. I also love throwback hip hop songs and try to sneak a good one into each class.


What do you do when you’re not getting gritty?
You can find me hanging out with my husband and fur babies, trying new restaurants, messing around with techy stuff like making websites, cooking up some concoction in the kitchen to blog about, or going to the beach. 

What’s your favorite “move” on the bike and why?
I really like a heavy push tap. Even though it’s a simple move, I feel like it can be so powerful to the right song and give you the opportunity to work off any “stuff” you’re worrying about or make you feel like you’re strong and can kick some major butt.

What is your favorite/trademark song to teach?
It’s hard to pick between these three…they all make an appearance from time to time…

What is your favorite food?
Chips and salsa. It’s a problem.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Zac Efron

What song instantly gets you dancing?
Anything Missy Elliott.

Do you have a secret talent?
I am a very happy, bubble-y person, but I have a secret bad ass gangster hip hop dancer side of me that is good at twerking. I also have this weird ability to remember people’s eye colors. If I make eye contact or talk to them once, I almost always remember their eye color…usually before I remember or learn their name.

Last book you read?
Food Prescription for Better Health”…I am a nerd for health/nutrition/wellness stuff and also just finished a Holistic Nutritionist certification, so it was part of that.

What would your last meal be?
My Grandma’s marble cake.

What was the first concert you went to?

In high school what were you most likely to….?
I guess it is a “most likely to” thing…I was voted “Best Dancer” for our yearbook in high school.


What was the last text you sent?
A picture of my dogs doing something goofy sent to my husband.

Who would play you in a movie?
Maybe Amy Schumer? I feel like I always have crazy, ridiculous, random things happen to me, or I do dumb, clumsy, dorky stuff that is hard not to laugh at or make fun of. I also share her sense of humor and like to laugh at myself.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
Chips and salsa and a big shaker of sea salt.

When you’ve had a long day how do you de-stress?
I take my dogs for a long walk, go to Grit, or Netflix it with my hubby. 

Favorite food/drink?
Chips and salsa. Did I mention I have a chips and salsa problem? Oh and a jalapeno margarita on the rocks with salt or a glass of Jam Jar (it’s “crappy” red wine, but I love it).

Do you do any other forms of workouts?
PiYo – an athletic body weight training workout inspired by yoga, and I also lift weights.

 Do you have anything else of interest you want your riders to know?
In class with them is one of my most favorite places to be in the whole wide world. They bring me more peace, happiness and inspiration than they probably know.
