August days are getting hot and playful; what better way to honor this month of blazing rays and beach blanket bingo, than having the ultimate beach girl, Maddy Post, as our August Instructor of the Month.
One of our newer instructors, Maddy teaches Monday and Friday at 7am.
She recently swung by the Outpost to let us get to know her, and love on her, a bit more publicly.
So, spill it Maddy! Give us the “nitty gritty” on you!
I am originally from San Pedro, CA. I moved to Orange County for College. I got my Bachelors at UC Irvine (zot zot, babyyy!), majored in Public Health with a minor in Business, and ran for the UC Irvine NCAA D1 Cross Country and Track & Field teams.
Currently, I am having a marvelous time living the grad life, teaching spin, traveling to as many corners of the earth as humanly possible, and figuring out what the next steps are in my career! If I didn’t live in CA, my next favorite country would definitely be Australia. I studied abroad in Sydney and I am fully in love with everythingggg Aussie.
What brought you to the Grit podium?
A desire for change and challenge.
When I graduated from UC Irvine, my college running career was over and I was looking for a new type of workout. I tried spin with a friend and was instantly obsessed. Not only was spin the most fun I had ever spent sweating for 45 mins, but there was also epic music AND to top it off spin is a completely low impact workout. Soo see ya, never, old running injuries.
I’m also kind of a music nerd. I used to spend hours finding new jams to listen to during track meets. With spin, I saw an opportunity where I could find new music for a new purpose, configure it into a playlist that somewhat resembled a track workout – different music BPM to represent different paces in a workout, aaand I could call this “work”? Ok ya, I am so in!
What was your first experience in the saddle room?
My first experience at Grit was actually Matt’s class. A friend brought me. We sat in the back and it was hotter than the sun in there. Like seriously, I thought I was possibly going to die, or rip off all of my clothes. Or both. But the vibes were insane and I loved every beat booming second of it. I had to come back and do it again. So I took Dani’s class next. Obsessed. Then I took Katie’s class and I’ve never laughed so hard during a workout. Like literally my face hurt from smiling so big the entire time. Needless to say, I was hooked.
What motivates you/inspires you?
Oh goodness, lots of things!
As an instructor, my clients inspire me. Seeing the drive in someone’s eyes during the last sprint or watching someone hold a hover juuusttt a little longer gets me super fired up! The energy in the saddle room really is contagious.
Finding new jams also really inspires me. I feel like when my music is fresh, so are my thoughts. And when my thoughts are fresh, class is more authentic and fueled by the moment.
Do you have any pre-class rituals?
Pre-class rituals? Hmm well I always alwayssss blast my playlist in the car on the way to class. I like to listen to each song at least once before class kicks off. Then I like to get to GRIT early and set up my mic and music and make sure it’s all good. And lastly, chapstick. Life necessity.
What sets you apart from the rest of the Grit instructors; what makes your class unique?
I think this is the absolute BEST part about Grit. Everyone has their own unique vibe they bring to their classes. There’s definitely something for everyone. As for my class, you’ll just have to come check it out & see for yourself 🙂
What do you do when you’re not getting gritty?
Oh gosh, sooo many thingsss! When I’m not in the saddle room some of my favorite activities include: practicing yoga, paddle boarding, floating in the ocean, hiking giant mountains, camping, snowboarding, photography, traveling to exotic places, and just plain rocking out to life. One of my life goals is to travel to one new place every year.
What’s your favorite “move” on the bike and why?
DOUBLE TIME HAND HOPS FOR SURE! I like anything with a quick beat I can rock out to. Hand Hops are really fun because switching from counts of 4 to 2 back to 4, etc. keeps your mind in it & the faster beats just get me super pumped!! A close second fav would defs be a Push to Tap.
What is your favorite/trademark song to teach?
Ooo gosh, soo many! I tend to switch up my music pretty frequently. There are of course some classics that really never get old, but some of my fav artists are: Odesza, Kygo, Bro Safari, The Chainsmokers, Ellie Goulding, Rihanna, Bassnectar, etc.
What is your favorite food?
Avocado. Just avocado. Like seriously, avocado on everything.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Do you have a secret talent?
I can stack 26 cheerios on top of each other before they topple over. Completely useless talent, but still winning! I can also whip up some pretty bomb french crepes, thanks to my french grandmother. 🙂
What would your last meal be?
Bear Flag Fish Co. please & thank you.
What was the first concert you went to?
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
Bikini shopping. Can I just have alllll of the bikinis pretty pleaseee?
When you’ve had a long day how do you de-stress?
Beach. Just take me to the beach – even if it’s only for a second at sunset.
Beach = happy place.
Current summer fav = watermelon juice with some fresh mint. So bomb.
