Christmas is coming a little early gritties!

For the month of June we give you, the one and only, the often imitated, but never duplicated, the mother of all of us baby {grit} dragons, Dani Wellbrock-Gallinger aka “boss babe” as our instructor of the month.

Give us a the nitty gritty on you

I am from La Verne, California.

I am Director of Operations (read HBIC) for GritCycle.

I am married to the coolest guy ever named Glenn (who has an EPIC beard btw.)

I have one younger sister, Kasey (Schwester).

My parents are Jeff (el Jefe) and Kathy (Drake).

I have three dogs: Verona (Snoogs), Ouzo (The Ouzzzzz), and Duke (Sgt. Gremington, Dukie Bootie, The Bootie-Sattva).

What brought you to the grit podium?

I worked with Matt and Marisa previously at another spin studio. The minute they asked me to teach, I was in!

What was your first experience in the saddle room?

Terrifying. I came from a studio that took a more traditional approach to spin class. There was a set routine and I really did not have to think much when I was putting a class together – it was basically plug some music in and go. Now I was challenged to incorporate figure eights (which I was like “what the f*ck is a figure eight???”), and a whole bunch of other choreography which was completely foreign to me; but I love a good challenge and I practiced my little ass off to get it right!

What motivates you/inspires you?

Failure. Mistakes. Disappointment. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but some of my best days have risen out of failures because I was challenged to rise out of it.

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm” –Winston Churchill

Do you have any pre-class rituals?

I usually arrive about a half hour before class starts. Coffee!!!  Before I open the doors I ALWAYS test my music and my mics – I want to have time to resort to my failover plan in case one of my devices takes a crap. I set out my mints and throat spray next to my iPad on the podium. I spray a little frankincense-lavender spray around the room. I also do a walk-through of the room to double check for trash/weights/earplugs on the floor in case the front desk babes missed anything, as well as check that the bikes are properly spaced. Once all that is done, doors open up so the clients can come in and get set up!

What do you do when you’re not getting gritty?

I LOVE Disneyland! My husband and I have season passes – it is my happy place. We also like to eat out (which is why I love to spin so much!) and discover new restaurants and bars. We spend a lot of time with family on the weekends! I also like to roller skate, practice hot yoga, and paddleboard.

What’s your favorite “move” on the bike and why?

Oh gosh do I have to pick just one? It really depends on my mood, and the mood of my playlist that particular day. Sometimes I am pretty aggressive and the playlist tends to use faster movements, and some days I create something a little moodier.

What is your favorite/trademark song to teach?

Ohhhh I have a few:

Tight Blue Jeans by Mickey Avalon

Baby’s On Fire by Die Antwoord

My Chick Bad by Ludacris

Bombtrack by Rage Against the Machine

Pass that Dutch by Missy Elliot

Crazy Bitch by Buckcherry

Tear You Apart by She Wants Revenge

Mommy Complex by Peaches

Disconnected by Face to Face

Teeth by Lady Gaga

Roses by The Chainsmokers…..shall I go on?

I absolutely LOVE music (sorry no country though) and I love to change my playlists frequently. You will hear some repeats, but I am always looking to push the envelope and introduce people to something new – even if it is 15 years old.

What is your favorite food?

I love Mexican food! I also have a soft spot for pizza and sushi. And beer.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Not technically a celebrity – but I think Clay Matthews is just dreamy.

What song instantly gets you dancing?

Let’s Dance by David Bowie

Do you have a secret talent?

I speak a few languages and I can probably out roller skate most people.

Last book you read?

Start with Why by Simon Sinek.

What would your last meal be?

Pizza and beer.

What was the first concert you went to?

Michael Jackson – my parents took me when I was 5 years old because they are the coolest!

In high school what were you most likely to….?

Oh gosh I have no idea – I was really into academics and focused on getting into college so I was focused on getting the college prep extracurricular activities on my resume. I was pretty boring back then.

What was the last text you sent?

“Oh shit! No worries.”

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

I don’t feel guilty about any of the pleasures I partake in! I love churros, beer, lipstick, Vans tennis shoes, dying my hair every color of the rainbow, books, dogs, overpriced high heel shoes, football, Las Vegas, stretchy pants, wigs, Halloween and dressing up in costume, and tattoos.

That pretty much sums it up.

When you’ve had a long day how do you de-stress?

With a bath – usually with a LUSH bath bomb!

Do you do any other forms of workouts?

Hot yoga, roller skating, paddle boarding.
